Volunteers work to restore Lompico Creek headwaters
. Hot coffee and cold beer greeted about 15 volunteers Saturday when they took a break from repairing habitat they helped save in a $5.6 million land deal last summer.

Lompico headwaters get big monetary boost

The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County has offered to match up to $10,000 in donations by Dec. 31 to pay for the 425-acre Lompico Headwaters above Felton.

Lompico Watershed Conservancy project restores creekbed to help steelhead travel further up Lompico Creek

Long gone are the days when swimmers frolicked in the manmade pool in Lompico Creek, but a conservation group hopes the days when more steelhead do so are in the future. Work is continuing this week on an effort to make it easier for the fish to swim upstream, through what used to be the old swimming hole, to lay their eggs.

Lompico voters reject recreation-district tax

A $25-per-parcel recreation tax lost in an all-mail ballot two weeks ago, but supporters see a silver lining in the defeat. "It’s not the end of the world," said Steve Nelson, who is on the board of the Lompico Community Center, the nonprofit that asked for the tax to raise $12,000 a year. "A lot of positive things came out of it. A lot of new people showed interest in being on the board. It brought the community together."

County tallies victory in logging fight

With the county’s longtime hope of tightening local logging policies all but uprooted by the courts, a small, but rather unusual state decision to halt a timber plan in the Islandia property in Northern Lompico this month may serve as a morale boost for logging opponents.

Sierra Club: Appeal Upheld: Lompico headwaters logging denied
On April 7th the California Board of Forestry upheld Santa Cruz County's appeal of the Lompico headwaters Timber Harvest Plan (THP), thus denying this logging plan in a critical watershed. The controversial logging plan closed public comment on September 20th 2001 and was extended 43 times until its approval on October 30th 2003. The Ventana has been covering this issue for several years.

Gone fishing: Anglers enjoy the first days of spring at Loch Lomond

The opening of Loch Lomond Reservoir this month was ushered in with water levels at capacity and record-setting warm weather, and visitors have taken notice. Already, fishermen have pulled 7-pound bass from the waters and boaters have rushed the paddle-boat docks in search of sunshine.

Lompico parks and recreation group pushes for parcel tax

The Lompico Community Center, who is dedicated to improving Lompico, are asking every residential property owner to pitch in by supporting a $25 parcel tax for parks and recreation for the next five years. With 500 homes in the area, it would be possible to raise $12,000 a year as seed money for improvement projects.

Private road owners, residents can get help stopping erosion

Last year, four drainage-improvement projects were funded, two in Lompico and two in Boulder Creek. They included replacing culverts, installing drains and gravel and recontouring roads to reduce erosion. Money is available for four projects this year.

The Loch Lomond recreation area opened Saturday, and so far the water level looks good."We’re full," said Ranger David Brooks. "There’s a tenth, maybe two-tenths of a foot going over the spill way."

The most hotly contested logging plan in Santa Cruz County history continues to languish in indecision as the California Department of Forestry filed another two-week extension to return its official response.

Technicality postpones logging

The California Department of Forestry delayed its review of a plan to log 200 acres in the Lompico Creek watershed. The forestry department was set to start its review of Redwood Empire owner Roger Burch’s plan to log part of his Islandia property Wednesday with an inspection of the land. The tour would have included forestry officials, scientists and Redwood Empire representatives.

The county’s own mountain lake opened for recreational use Thursday. By Saturday morning there were plenty of anglers out enjoying the beauty of Loch Lomond.

Environmental, human rights top concerns for Bugental

Bugental was key in bringing Roger Birch of the logging company Redwood Empires to the negotiating table with the Lompico Water District to try to convince Birch to sell 410 acres to the district so it could be preserved. Discussions are ongoing.

Water worries trip up Mount Hermon expansion

Planning officials on Wednesday were reluctant to make a decision on a proposed expansion of the Mount Hermon Conference Center and Redwood Camp until they receive more information about its demand on the county water supply. The plan would offset increased water demands with conservation and by drilling a third well to capture excess surface water that would be injected into the Lompico aquifer.

Town rejects Loch Lomond Heights name

Don’t expect this rural enclave outside Felton to call itself Loch Lomond Heights anytime soon. But backers of a name change aren’t giving up. "It is going to happen, sooner or later," said name change proponent Elaine Wolters of Lompico, a long-term resident who insists the existing name unfairly links the community to its checkered past. "It might be a little later, but it will happen."

Loch Lomond Lake ranger hangs up his hat

After 31 years of service, Walt Cacace is hanging up his ranger’s hat at Loch Lomond Recreation Area. But he doesn’t plan to leave the park. "I plan to apply for a different job: park visitor and fisherman." Cacace is retiring from his position as chief park ranger at Loch Lomond, a reservoir tucked away in the Santa Cruz mountains in Lompico.

Tardy transit bus irks Felton parents

Parents and teachers are clamping down on a chronically tardy school bus at San Lorenzo Valley Middle School. Transit officials said the tardiness actually is a byproduct of an effort to improve bus service. The district stepped up service for Lompico students in early December, looping in a special bus route, No. 33, geared to students who need to arrive at school early for special activities and extra-credit work.

Tardy transit bus irks Felton parents

Bears make tracks for local mountains. Smaller black bears may be moving into what was once grizzly habitat. Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputy Larry Roland has no doubt what he saw while driving up Lompico Road. “It was definitely a bear and it was in a hurry,” Roland said. “It ran down from the hillside on the left right in front of me and down into the creek.”
