A man by the name of Isaac Graham settled in the area
of the camp in the 1830s. Soon after, Mexican authorities
named Grahams settlement Roaring Camp. Not long after,
the areas first railroad, the Santa Cruz & Felton,
began carrying tourists to the Big Trees and to the
beach in the 1870's.
The Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad
runs from Roaring Camp Station through the redwoods
of Santa Cruz County and has been in operation since
1985. The 6-mile round trip on an 1880-steam train is
made in an hour and a quarter. Picnicking is permitted
and a barbecue lunch is offered on weekends from May
through October. Times and fares depend on train and
time. Please call for information.

The Santa Cruz Wharf is the longest public Wharf on
the west coast: a half mile long. It is the most recent
of five wharves since the first wharf in Santa Cruz
was built in 1850. With about 4,500 wood pilings, it
makes a bend at the last third to accommodate the oncoming
wave action. It was also designed like this to accommodate
the loading of ships.
The Wharf was originally built for commerce but has
become primarily recreational over the years. It is
now an open marine park that is open to the public from
5:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. The Wharf is accessible for bicycles,
wheel chairs, pedestrians and automobiles.

The adobe structure is constructed from bricks, made
primarily from mud and straw, and stands as a reminder
of the past. The Mission Santa Cruz was established
in 1791 and built between the years of 1822 and 1824,
mostly by the hard work of Native Americans in what
was then known as "Alta California". These
Native Americans were the main residents in what is
now Santa Cruz County's oldest building. The lovely,
single-story adobe has been restored to its original
appearance.
